Proceed with Caution when Choosing A Morning Cereal!!

A lovely friend of mine sent an article on the 10 worst and best morning cereals.  I’m sure many of my readers would be surprised to see the results.  Breakfast is an essential part of starting our day but we want to make good great nutritional choices.  What’s the point of starting your day with a big bowl of SUGAR?!  There’s no fuel in sugar to get your brain powered up in the morning.
The Environmental Working Group's "10 Worst Children's Cereals," based on percent sugar by weight:
1. Kellogg's Honey Smacks -- 55.6%2. Post Golden Crisp -- 51.9%3. Kellogg's Froot Loops Marshmallow -- 48.3%4. Quaker Oats Cap'n Crunch's OOPS! All Berries -- 46.9%5. Quaker Oats Cap'n Crunch Original -- 44.4%6. Quaker Oats Oh!s -- 44.4%7. Kellogg's Smorz -- 43.3%8. Kellogg's Apple Jacks -- 42.9%9. Quaker Oats Cap'n Crunch's Crunch Berries -- 42.3%10. Kellogg's Froot Loops Original -- 41.4%
What’s most interesting about the article is the following statement “some cereals contain more sugar than Twinkies and Chips Ahoy! cookies.”  THINK about that!!!
Remember a few post ago, I mentioned clean eating.  There’s nothing clean about eating cereal…however, cleaning eating requires eating foods made with a short list of ingredients.  Therefore, if you were to venture out to eat something like cereal, it’s recommended by EWG to chose a cereal with a short list of ingredients, high in fiber with few or no added sugars.
The Environmental Working Group recommends the following “Big Brand Cereals”
1. Kellogg's Mini-Wheats: Unfrosted Bite-Size
2. Kellogg's Mini-Wheats: Frosted Big Bite
3. Kellogg's Mini-Wheats: Frosted Bite-Size
4. Kellogg's Mini-Wheats:  Frosted Little Bite
 5. General Mills Cheerios Original
6. General Mills Kix Original.

  1. An interesting fact for you: Every single one of these cereals aren't allowed in the UK or most of Europe because of their high sugar content!

  2. Wow, you literally shocked me with that interesting fact. When will America wake up?!! And I'm sure if we were to ever pull these cereals off the shelves it would be a national outcry!! So sad but true.

  3. A breakfast I have 1-2 times a week is 1 cup of general mills cheerios topped with 1 small banana and 1/2 cup 1% milk (1% is my pref.). The banana is the natural sweetner to make the cherrios less bland. :)
